One of the most important leadership roles within healthcare is the “Chief Medical Officer.” CMOs are essential for stability and sustained success and in their ever-changing role, consistently facing new challenges, including becoming more hands-on in improving the patient experience for better clinical outcomes.
Altura recently sponsored and hosted an interactive summit attended by Chief Medical Officers nationwide. A unique feature of this event was several roundtable sessions which allowed CMOs to share ideas with industry peers in an intimate setting.
Altura’s roundtable discussion was presented by John Orton, US Healthcare Leader from Avaya. The topics discussed included Individualized Patient Experiences, Communication Ecosysems, and Augmented Workflow.
We gained valuable insights by surveying Chief Medical Officers to learn how technology is being used to enhance patient experience and improve clinical outcomes.
Staying up-to-date with the latest technology is important to Chief Medical Officers and nearly a third of those surveyed stated that they were either in the process of or soon going to be exploring possible enhancements.
Of those technologies, the value of adding artificial intelligence continues to be a top priority among CMOs. Respondents who are currently using artificial intelligence and machine learning mentioned that they are seeing improvements in clinical outcomes as a result. The majority of those not currently using it stated it is something they hope to add in the near future.
40% of CMOs surveyed said their organization did not currently have the capability to immediately share medical records in real-time. For example, this would include large patient files or x-ray images that would be shared instantly with patients, doctors, and external partner healthcare facilities using a highly secure file exchange solution.
The majority of respondents (60%) also stated that they did not currently have the capability to convert voice messages to text. Having this capability would drastically improve workflow optimization.
CMOs ranked their ongoing issues as it related to their job function. The top three concerns were workflow improvements, reducing redundant processes, and improving their reporting and analytics.
We strive to learn and understand the issues that medical professionals face concerning their day-to-day technology and communication needs, so that we can offer the best and most cost-effective solutions.
